Labour Government Confirms the Minimum 'C' grade EPC by 2030 for Landlords.

Labour Announces Ambitious Plan: All Rental Homes to Reach EPC 'C' by 2030

Good news for tenants and the environment! not so good for news for Landlords needing to upgrade. Labour has officially confirmed that all rented homes being sold in the UK will need to achieve a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of 'C' by 2030.

This progressive move is part of the government’s broader commitment to reducing fuel poverty and creating a more sustainable future.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Under Secretary for Energy Security and Net Zero, shared the announcement as part of Labour’s ongoing efforts to support households with energy costs. This comes after Green Party MP Ellie Chowns brought attention to the issue, asking whether it would become a formal policy for landlords to boost the energy efficiency of their properties. Ms. Fahnbulleh’s response was a resounding yes, signaling a brighter, greener future for renters across the nation.

Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, also chimed in during a recent Commons address. He emphasized Labour’s commitment to action, contrasting it with previous administrations. “This Government is determined to ensure that all rental homes meet the proper energy performance standards by 2030—a step that was long overdue.”

While the initiative has garnered widespread support, there are concerns about the potential financial impact on landlords. Propertymark, a leading property sector organization, has called for financial aid to help landlords meet these new standards. They’ve stressed the importance of realistic and achievable goals, urging the government to provide incentives rather than penalties.

Propertymark has reached out to Ed Miliband to seek further clarification and assistance for landlords as they work towards these vital energy efficiency targets.

As the 2030 deadline approaches, Labour faces the exciting challenge of balancing their strong commitment to reducing fuel poverty with the need to support landlords in making these essential improvements. It’s a win-win for tenants, the environment, and a more energy-efficient future!
